SelectGrip® – The surface treatment that characterises DESS® prosthetic abutments

Innovation, research, development – activities aimed at finding new or better solutions to the problems we encounter. They are, therefore, of unquestionable importance, and even more so when they are applied to the field of health. That is why we at DESS® are very proud of the modest contribution that SelectGrip® made to dental prosthetic solutions ten years ago when we obtained the patent.

What is SelectGrip®?

SelectGrip® is a surface treatment that, when applied to the cementation area of a prosthetic abutment, increases retention values by up to 500% compared to the same untreated abutment.

This surface is achieved by the controlled and delimited bombardment of aluminium oxide particles exclusively in the area where the crown or coping will subsequently be cemented.

In this way, a uniform surface is achieved with a degree of roughness (Ra) greater than 0.8, preserving the rest of the abutments free of impurities. This is of paramount importance in any abutment or Ti Base with gingival transition, where any contamination of the surface can lead to subsequent risks. SelectGrip® applies to all DESS® Ti Bases, AURUMBase®, ELLIPTIBase®, and C-Base® as well as straight and angled abutments.

Why is the performance of SelectGrip® so important?

The benefits of this technology are mainly threefold.

1. Increased retention between abutment and prosthesis

Thanks to the various tests carried out by independent laboratories, the aforementioned 500% increase in retention has been confirmed. In more comprehensible terms, this means that with the smallest of the DESS® Ti Bases, with only 3 mm of shaft height, values between 60 and 98 kg can be achieved. In other words, to de-cement a crown on an AURUMBase®, it may be necessary to apply up to 98 kg of pressure. Accidental de-cementing becomes virtually impossible.

2. Cleanliness and safety

The correlation between the presence of impurities on the surface in contact with the gingiva of the abutments and the increased probability of periodontal problems is well known and has been proven by numerous studies.

Thanks to the optimal, precise, and industrial process of SelectGrip® application, the abutment is free of aluminium oxide impurities in these areas. This is an undeniable added value for a successful final prosthesis.

3. Saving time and materials

Last but not least, prosthetists appreciate the savings in time and consumables they get when working with DESS® prosthetic abutments with SelectGrip®. Avoiding the manual blasting of these products is a definite time and associated cost advantage.
