28 February: Fanconi Anaemia and oral health

Every 28 February, Rare Disease Day highlights a reality that often remains out of the spotlight: thousands of patients and families live with uncommon conditions that require more research, greater clinical knowledge, and stronger social support.

This year, at DESS®, we want to help raise awareness by talking about Fanconi Anaemia and supporting those who work every day for the people affected. That is why we have made a €1,000 donation to the Fundación Anemia de Fanconi, a small organisation that supports patients and families, promotes research, and helps increase understanding of the disease.

What is Fanconi Anaemia?

Fanconi Anaemia is a rare, inherited and highly complex condition that can affect different organs and body systems. Among other aspects, it is characterised by a higher predisposition to bone marrow abnormalities (bone marrow failure) and an increased risk of developing certain types of cancer over the course of a lifetime.

As with many rare diseases, diagnosis can be challenging due to the variability of symptoms and the need for an interdisciplinary approach and specialised follow-up.

The lesser-known dimension: its link to oral health

When we talk about Fanconi Anaemia, one key aspect is not always mentioned: oral health matters too. Clinical evidence highlights the need for rigorous dental care and ongoing prevention of oral and craniofacial issues.

In addition, there is particular concern around head and neck cancer, with special attention to the oral area. For this reason, different guidelines and materials aimed at dental professionals emphasise the importance of regular monitoring and early detection through thorough oral examinations (typically at least twice a year), as early diagnosis improves prognosis.

This is directly connected to our sector: dentistry and dental technology can be essential allies in improving quality of life for these patients—not only through treatment, but also through prevention, follow-up, and coordination with medical teams.

A shared commitment

This 28 February, let’s make sure rare does not mean invisible. Fanconi Anaemia reminds us that health is holistic—and that oral health is also part of care and long-term follow-up.

At DESS®, we believe that innovation in healthcare does not happen only in laboratories or clinics. It also happens when:

  • accurate, accessible information is shared,
  • research is advanced,
  • and those who support families in the most difficult moments are backed.

That is why this donation to the Fundación Anemia de Fanconi is, above all, a commitment to awareness and support.

How you can help (even if you are not a healthcare professional)

Visibility makes a real difference in rare diseases. You can contribute in simple ways:

  1. Share this article or informative posts about Fanconi Anaemia.
  2. Follow the Foundation’s activity and help amplify their messages.
  3. If you can, support them (donations, solidarity initiatives, sharing within your community).
  4. If you work in dentistry, reinforce a key message: prevention and early detection in the oral cavity can be decisive for patients with Fanconi Anaemia.

From DESS®, thank you for helping us give a voice to this cause.
